Emoni Bates’ high-profile recruitment is nearing its conclusion.
Bates, the No. 5 player in the class of 2021 after reclassifying from 2022, is expected to announce his commitment on Wednesday, according to 247Sports. Bates is picking between Memphis, Oregon, Michigan State and the NBA G League.
Bates was once considered all but a lock to jump straight to the professional ranks out of high school — especially after he backed off his commitment to Michigan State earlier this year. However, Memphis is now thought to be the favorite to land the elite recruit who has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant.
247Sports reported Tuesday that Bates already has a Memphis school email account. While that does not guarantee his enrollment at the University — school email addresses are given to accepted students regardless of enrollment status — the Tigers are trending to land Bates after recently reeling in Jalen Duren.
Bates’ commitment could be imminent, as the last day for late registration at Memphis is Aug. 26.
If Bates does indeed commit to Memphis, Penny Hardaway would have a team capable of making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. There is still a chance that Bates still opts for the professional route or takes his talents to Oregon instead of Memphis — Michigan State is essentially out of the picture — but if Bates’ choice is to play with Duren and the Tigers, an announcement will be made shortly.
