It’s definitely the season for pro wrestling contract news and rumors, but one person who doesn’t want to be part of that scene is Eddie Kingston.
The Mad King pulled off a very popular victory at AEW Grand Slam in his home, New York City, dethroning hated rival Claudio Castagnoli to become the ROH World Champion. Kingston has spoken passionately about what his current AEW run has meant to him, and that he nearly retired from wrestling before it started, feeling he was at a low point when work in the indies dried up during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fortunately for his fans, he’s going to keep things going in AEW and ROH for a while longer. Without going into specifics on when it started or would end, Kingston told AdFreeShows that he quietly signed a new four-year deal with AEW at some point (h/t to Fightful for the transcription).
If you notice, you haven’t heard anything about me with a contract because I did my shit on the low. My thing was coming up, I got four more years. I’m straight. No one needs to know how much, no one needs to know how long. I got my fucking shit. I got my shit and I’m going to be there for a minute because there is nowhere else I want to be.
The 41-year-old Kingston first arrived in AEW on the July 22, 2020 episode of Dynamite, taking on Cody Rhodes in a No Disqualification match for the TNT Championship. Along with becoming a fixture there, he fulfilled another career goal by debuting for New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 2021, and competed in the NJPW G1 Climax tournament this year for the first time. Kingston currently holds the NJPW Strong Openweight Championship alongside his ROH title, and will defend them both against Katsuyori Shibata at WrestleDream on Oct. 1.
