The Philadelphia Eagles have made the playoffs three years in a row, have one of the league’s best signal-callers and believe their Super Bowl window is still open.
With that reasoning alone, Howie Roseman made it clear that the Eagles are simply “retooling” choosing to get younger in key positions, instead of a total rebuild.
“We’re not talking about a rebuild. We are talking about a retool. With younger players” GM Howie Roseman said at the NFL Combine on Tuesday.
The Eagles have seven regular draft picks and three compensatory selections, bringing their total haul to 10. It’s unknown whether the Eagles will utilize all ten picks, but Roseman emphasized that a reload was the course of action.
“I think there are two parts to that when we sit here. When you look at the teams who’ve won the Super Bowl, there’s also a veteran component to the team. So we’re not talking about a total rebuild, we’re talking about a retooling period and injecting some youth. We’ve got a lot of highly paid players on our team; good players, that’s why we paid them. So, you have to supplement them with some good young plays. And then we know that no matter how good you are in the draft, there is a hit and miss rate. It’s just the nature of the beast. And so the more draft picks you to have, the better chance you have at hitting on guys, and we really haven’t had those.”
Roseman speaking about the Eagles not previously having the ammunition to move up in the draft speaks volumes about how aggressive Philadelphia could be in the draft if they believe a player they covet is still available.
