Duke football drops 10 spots in the USA TODAY Sports re-rank after first loss

After the Blue Devils finally lost a game on Saturday, USA TODAY Sports dropped them out of the top 30 in the college football re-rank.

USA TODAY Sports released its updated FBS college football re-rank on Monday, and the Duke Blue Devils dropped 10 spots to 38th after their loss to Georgia Tech.

First-year head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] and his team came within 15 minutes of the school’s first 6-0 start in decades, taking a 14-10 lead after a 65-yard Sahmir Hagans touchdown.

However, after not allowing a fourth-quarter touchdown through Week 5, the Duke defense gave up two to the Yellow Jackets en route to a 24-14 loss. Diaz brought up after the game that some members of the defense couldn’t come off the field due to depth issues, an issue the upcoming bye week will hopefully help with.

Miami (sixth), the Clemson Tigers (10th), SMU (20th), Pittsburgh (22nd), Syracuse (32nd), and Louisville (33rd) were the only teams in the conference who finished above the Blue Devils. Georgia Tech, despite the victory, only rose 10 spots to 43rd.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, after their third straight loss, tumbled nine spots to 67th.
