The Duke Blue Devils are throwing it back for their Week 9 game against SMU.
According to a social media post from the team on Wednesday night, the Blue Devils will bring back their classic script lettering on the helmets for Saturday night’s game against the SMU Mustangs.
“The script Duke is back,” the post was captioned on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The script ‘Duke’ used to be the team’s primary helmet for nearly three decades, the defining look of the Blue Devils from 1978 to 2003. While it has reappeared pretty frequently in recent years, most often from 2017-21, Saturday will mark the first time this season that Duke returns to its roots.
The Blue Devils did come up with a clever version of the script lettering last season when they debuted the Gothic script helmets, which they wore nearly a half-dozen times in 2023. Duke brought that look back for the first two home games of the year against Elon and Connecticut, but Wednesday’s teaser makes it sound like the classic font will be back for Week 9.
