Let’s say it right now, because we don’t have to wait: USC could have the next great tight end tandem in college football. Duce Robinson and Walter Matthews could be the next Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington. Robinson and Matthews could be to USC what Bowers and Washington were at Georgia: key components of a program’s success and reliable targets for an established quarterback, helping a school win back-to-back national championships.
Four-star tight end Walter Matthews, a consensus top-100 prospect in the 2024 class, committed to USC in a Twitter post on Wednesday. The Hiram, Georgia, native took an official visit to the Trojans the first weekend of June and fell in love with the program.
“What stands out the most about USC is my relationship with Coach Riley,” Matthews told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong. “No other school really comes close to it.”‘
247Sports ranks the 6-foot-7, 255-pound Matthews as the No. 90 prospect nationally, the No. 7 tight end, and the No. 13 player in the state of Georgia.
Adding Matthews to the 2024 class is one notable development. Combine that with USC landing Duce Robinson — who comes in ranked as a five-star prospect and the nation’s No. 17 overall recruit, per 247Sports.com’s composite — makes for a loaded tight end room. USC could possibly have the best duo in the country when the 2024 season comes around.
Robinson and Matthews have the potential to transcend the tight end position at USC, a position that wasn’t utilized all that much in head coach Lincoln Riley’s first season.
The projected tight end room for 2024 is Robinson, Matthews, Lake McRee and Joey Olsen. USC also landed four-star TE Walker Lyons, who will complete his LDS mission and will figure into the program’s plans at a later point. In 2024, it will be all about Robinson and Matthews.
