It isn’t a guarantee that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will return to play in the 2020 season, but he’s already earned a high ranking among potential league MVP candidates. Per the latest odds from BetMGM, Brees has tied Green Bay Packers passer Aaron Rodgers to place fifth-most (+1600) among the leading options.
Interestingly, the reigning MVP doesn’t own the top spot. Baltimore Ravens phenom Lamar Jackson won the past season’s award, but he sits in third place (+600). He trails Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes (who won the 2018 MVP, and leads everyone with odds of +400) and Seattle Seahawks franchise quarterback Russell Wilson (+500). The only other player between Brees and those top three favorites is Houston Texans superstar Deshaun Watson (+1200), who Brees out-dueled in Week 1 last season.
Here’s the breakdown at the time of writing:
- Patrick Mahomes, +400
- Russell Wilson, +500
- Lamar Jackson, +600
- Deshaun Waston, +1200
- Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, +1600
Of course, it’s unclear whether Brees will return for one more run at a Super Bowl. He’s not expected to make a decision until mid-February at the soonest, and this is the first offseason in which he’s seemed to really consider life after football. He’ll have options on the table in joining telecasts from the broadcast booth, and may prefer that to another grueling year of conditioning and further time away from his young children. So this is absolutely a storyline to watch in the weeks ahead.
