Drake Maye makes first comments after losing starting QB competition

Drake Maye comments on Jacoby Brissett being named the Patriots’ starting QB

The New England Patriots named Jacoby Brissett their starting quarterback on Thursday, and Drake Maye will slide in as the No. 2 option, at least for now.

Maye took the news in stride, when speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon.

The rookie had a solid preseason, throwing for 192 yards and scoring both a passing and rushing touchdown. He had a solid showing in the team’s preseason finale against the Washington Commanders, throwing for 126 yards and a touchdown.

There’s hope that Maye will have a bright future as the eventual starter for the Patriots considering the team selected him third overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Nevertheless, he understands the situation as it stands currently.

“There’s two ways to look at it,” said Maye, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “Obviously I want to play, the competitive edge in me. At the same time, I understand the situation. Jacoby has been in the offense and got reps with the 1s all camp … I feel like I left it all out there. No regrets coming back.”

One has to wonder when Maye will see starting action.

There’s a good chance it will be at some point this season. It could happen later in the year, when the rookie will have had at least half a season to fully digest the playbook and get up to speed with the offense.
