North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is entering the 2023 season as one of the best players in college football. Maye burst on to the scene last year as a starter for the Tar Heels and quickly became one of the best quarterbacks, even gaining some Heisman hype.
Going into this season, Maye is again a Heisman frontrunner behind only USC’s Caleb Williams. He’s also the leader of UNC’s offense and if the Tar Heels want to contend in the ACC, he’s going to have to be as good as he was last year and maybe even better.
But for Maye, he’s not feeling the pressure of having UNC’s offense on his shoulders.
“I think with last year, I feel like I had probably more pressure than I feel coming into this year,” Maye told ESPN recently. “Last year gave me a lot of confidence as the year went on. The more reps I got, and especially the more games we started winning, I was getting pretty confident.”
Not feeling the pressure is a great thing. Maye is more comfortable going into his second year even with all of the attention on him nationally in terms of being a top prospect for the 2024 NFL draft.
Now, let’s see if Maye can get even better and put together another special year in Chapel Hill.
