Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
The New England Patriots are fresh off another embarrassing season, much to the delight of many NFL fans, who saw Tom Brady torture their favorite teams for two decades.
Since Brady departed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is now retired (or is he), New England has gone through a quarterback carousel that includes Bailey Zappe and former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. Neither of the aformentioned are expected to be the Patriots’ starter next year, as Robert Kraft will likely look to the upcoming NFL Draft.
Who does famous ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper have New England taking at third overall?
None other than former UNC quarterback Drake Maye, who engineered some of the program’s most electric offenses of the 21st century.
It’s easy to see why Maye would be the Patriots’ choice. Before we get into statistics, Maye is known to be a team player who’s always seen hyping up his guys. Even after bad drives, he shakes his own mistakes off and heads into the next series with an air of confidence.
If you follow the Patriots, there are rumors Mac Jones didn’t have control of the locker room. When you’re a quarterback, this is a MUST-HAVE.
On the field, Maye has a cannon of an arm and a fast set of legs to complement. He threw for 8,018 yards, ran for 1,209, tossed 63 touchdowns and ran for 16 more.
Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe both are solid quarterbacks, but Maye would be a huge upgrade from them. If selected by New England, I have no doubt that Maye will embrace the tall task of filling in Brady’s shoes.
