Doug Pederson praises Trevor Lawrence’s communication

Trevor Lawrence getting good reviews from new head coach Doug Pederson

Selected as the number one overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has a significant opportunity to make a year two jump.

Lawrence’s rookie season wasn’t the prettiest, but it’s difficult to blame him. The Jaguars did him no favors setting him up with recently fired head coach Urban Meyer which led to one of the most bizarre situations we’ve seen in the NFL.

It’s also safe to say they didn’t surround him with much help on the offensive side of the ball, with other former Tiger and 2021 first-round pick Travis Etienne going down with a season-ending foot injury doing him no favors as well.

Though things started shakier than expected in Jacksonville, the team has done a better job of surrounding Lawrence with talent and a super bowl winning head coach in Doug Pederson.

Pederson met with the media before the Jaguars 2022 Rookie Minicamp, saying some great things about Trevor Lawrence and his communication skills and ability to learn. There is still a lot to learn for the young quarterback, but Lawrence has proven to want to do so.

Here are some quotes from Doug Pederson’s press conference via the Jacksonville Jaguars:

“He’s so engaging right now,” Pederson said. “The communication is pretty incredible. The things that he sees on the football field and even from the standpoint of, ‘Hey, I like this play. This is what we did last year. I like this play. I like this concept, is there a way that we can incorporate this in our offense?’

“That’s the dialogue that’s going on right now. This is the time to embrace that and get it into our system now.”

“Kind of almost like hitting the reset button just a little bit,” Pederson said. “This is the first time that we’ve had our chance to work with him and really begin to work on the details, the fundamentals, and how to be a professional and his study habits and all those things that come with being an NFL quarterback.

“The thing with Trevor I really like is the fact that he played last year and so this is not his rookie season. But for us, as coaches, being the first time to get our hands on him and just putting him through maybe a different set of drills, something he hasn’t been used to in his past, and really developing his talent and allowing him to kind of showcase that on the field. It’s teaching him exactly what we’re asking of him within our system and then letting him grow from there.”

Lawrence has picked up a year of experience in the NFL and has learned from his experiences. Now is the time for Pederson and his staff to implement what they believe Lawrence needs to work on to help him take the next step as a QB.

Quarterback is the most important position in the NFL, and Trevor Lawrence has one of the highest ceilings in the game. If Doug Pederson can help Lawrence tap into that potential, the Jaguars could have one of the premier players in the league.
