Ahh, the good old days.
You’re covering Florida and they’re playing a nobody in the opener and you are trying to figure out how to make it interesting and then [autotag]Steve Spurrier[/autotag] walks in for his post-game presser and all is right with the world.
There has never been anyone like the Head Ball Coach during his 12 years at Florida and on opening day, he usually had one of two takes – no big deal beating a bad team or we’ve been reading our press clippings too much.
There is also this — his 12-0 record in opening games at Florida.
Again, the only two Power 5 teams Spurrier went up against in openers at UF were Kentucky and an Oklahoma State team dealing with probation, but that was back in the old days of scheduling.
It’s also one reason no Florida coach has ever lost the first game he coached for the Gators since Charley Pell kicked off his 0-10-1 debut.
