The Miami Dolphins are going to face a difficult decision this upcoming offseason with wide receiver Albert Wilson. Wilson, who signed with the Miami Dolphins to serve as a replacement for Jarvis Landry ahead of the 2018 NFL season, has struggled with health and durability issues for two consecutive seasons now and appears to be a shell of the player that first stepped onto the field for the Dolphins and was one of the most potent run after catch threats in all of football.
That was, of course, before a hip injury unceremoniously ended his 2018 campaign halfway through the year. And since Wilson’s return to the field, the juice and quickness that made him such a threat doesn’t appear to be back for Wilson — and neither is his production. Through Week 12, Wilson has logged 20 catches for just 117 yards (5.9 yards per reception) this season.
Further complicating matters is Wilson’s contract. Wilson is due $9.5M in cash in 2020 with a cap hit that exceeds over $10.8M on the season.
While the Dolphins would likely prefer not to bail on Wilson prematurely, the financials, lack of production and the emergence of Allen Hurns and Preston Williams as viable receivers makes this decision look increasingly easy for the Dolphins in the coming months. It’s an unfortunate potential ending for Wilson, who jolted fans with his electric play in space for the first seven games of 2018. But Miami, in their continued overhaul of the roster, would be wise to consider parting ways and starting fresh with a different slot receiver starting next season.
