The Miami Dolphins’ surprising coaching staff overhaul this offseason may not have been expected, but it also wasn’t unheard of. The Dolphins are still in the process of laying the foundation they’re looking for as a rebuilding program — and if there were ever a time to change course or alter philosophies, the time is now. The longer the Dolphins wait to change their minds about how something should look, the more un-doing will have to be done.
Which is why Dolphins fans shouldn’t fret at all about the overhaul, even as the numbers roll in from across the league and it becomes apparent just how much change the Dolphins instituted this offseason.
Of all the NFL franchises, no team changed more coaching positions than the Miami Dolphins — and only the Los Angeles Chargers had an equal amount.
6) Most staff turnover (Coordinator/Position Coach) without a HC change:
7 changes – LAC, MIA
6 changes – DET
5 changes – ATL, CHI, HST, MIN, NE— Dan Hatman (@Dan_Hatman) February 7, 2020
Of course, the Dolphins’ changes impact both sides of the football. The Dolphins changed both coordinator positions, added an outside linebackers coach, hired a new defensive backs coach to replace the promotion received by Josh Boyer and feature a new offensive line coach to boot — the third in 12 months for Brian Flores.
The good news, as mentioned, is that Miami isn’t so far into their program that change is going to be detrimental. Quite the contrary, actually. The Dolphins’ actual roster is going to experience so much overhaul and change in the coming months that a lack of continuity among the coaches will likely be just a blip on the radar.
So onward and upward, Miami Dolphins! All the coaching in the world won’t take you where you want to go unless you’ve got some talent to back it up.
