Dolphins recent scoring outburst marks optimism for team in 2020

The Dolphins have scored 82 points over the last three weeks despite heavy injuries to the offense. That should be celebrated.

What if we told you the Miami Dolphins have scored the 6th most points in the NFL over the course of the past three weeks — would you believe it? It’s a fact! The Dolphins have logged 82 points scored over their last three weeks, 24 points in a loss to Cleveland, 37 points in a win over the Eagles and 21 points in a loss to the New York Jets.

It’s a pretty incredible feat when you consider the Dolphins have played stretches of these contests without every single skill player the team started the year with. DeVante Parker missed significant amount of the Jets game — and the Dolphins paid for it with a lack of ability to finish drives. But they still consistently moved the ball. The running back situation is down to plans D and E after seeing Kenyan Drake, Mark Walton and Kalen Ballage all fail to commandeer the backfield for varying reasons.

Wide receiver Preston Williams has been on injured reserve since the season’s midpoint and the Dolphins are sorely missing him as well as Jakeem Grant.

And yet the Dolphins have scored more points over the last three weeks than teams like the Seattle Seahawks and the Houston Texans. Scheduling, of course, has a large hand in why Miami’s found more offense success than those teams. But 82 points with just 272 combined rushing yards is no small feat — especially when considering the sorry state of the Dolphins offensive line this season.

These Dolphins haven’t been able to break through in the win column in a big way this season, but they’ve surpassed the expectations everyone held for them at the beginning of the year, when Miami was expected to be the worst of the worst and an embarrassment to the league. Credit Miami’s coaching for that. And it’s time to get excited about what this staff can do once the team builds up the roster with upgraded talent.

And with the Giants and Bengals looming on the remaining schedule, the 2019 Dolphins may not be done their scoring purge yet, either.
