There’s a lot of change that takes place every offseason for an NFL team, but for one that’s going through a regime change, the whole world can seem different.
For the Miami Dolphins, they moved on from Brian Flores and brought in Mike McDaniel. The personality change alone is major, but obviously, the management style and schemes will be different as well. These are all things that Tua Tagovailoa and the rest of the roster will have to adapt to.
In an interview with the Miami Herald this week, McDaniel discussed Tagovailoa’s involvement in the game plan and preparation process.
“In terms of feedback, it’s more of creating an atmosphere for easy dialogue,” McDaniel said. “There will be some stuff that we ask him that he hasn’t done. We want to train him at it but then it’s very, very important that he feels comfortable to communicate back to you, ‘I don’t like this because of X,’ after a given time of diving into that. That’s where he’ll be invaluable because we want players to play their best. For them to play their best, they have to be confident in what they’re trying to execute.”
With all of the offensive coordinators and systems that Tagovailoa has had to learn in his young NFL career, it would be surprising if he’s had this level of input into the offense. It’s great that McDaniel and his staff are willing to make him feel comfortable because that’s when quarterbacks succeed in this league.
