Dolphins have “8 or 9” players they’re comfortable with at pick No. 5

The Miami Dolphins are officially guaranteed to get a player they love with the 5th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Miami, who some have speculated may regret their late season success due to the impact on the 2020 NFL Draft order, may still ideally like to see a scenario play out that puts the team atop the draft order to get their top overall player, but we now know courtesy of Dolphins general manager Chris Grier that there’s no shortage of options that the Dolphins will still love no matter what.

Grier, who met virtually with the South Florida media yesterday to prep for next week’s 2020 NFL Draft, provided a comforting tidbit regarding the Dolphins’ decision with the No. 5 overall pick in this draft — the Dolphins will definitely be getting a player they love when they come on the clock, even if they don’t move up.

“I would say when you’re at that No. 5 pick, every year the joke is around the scouting world that if you’re picking 12, there’s always 10 that you like,” joked Grier.

“We’re at five but we feel really good about – (there are) probably eight or nine players we feel really good about. We’ll get a good player and we’ll be very happy to have him, and I think the fans will be happy as well.”

Having more players valued worthy of the pick that you’re drafting at is a great problem to have — it will mean that the Dolphins will have to make a decision on which player they like best before turning in the card as compared to reaching for a player they may feel isn’t necessarily worthy of their pick. The primary question is, of course, how many of those players are quarterbacks? If the Dolphins have four quarterbacks they deem worthy of the No. 5 pick, the team is set. That’s not a very likely outcome.

Miami presumably falls in line with the rest of the league and would love the value of a top pick spent on LSU QB Joe Burrow. But is there only one other quarterback among their top 8 or 9 players? If so, Miami may be prompted to act aggressively. If there’s a third quarterback in the mix, the Dolphins are almost assuredly going to stay put and draft at 5 — still hopeful for the chance to choose between quarterbacks but not backed into a corner and feeling the pressure of praying their one signal caller of choice falls to 5.
