The Miami Dolphins’ corresponding move to cutting rookie offensive tackle Isaiah Prince yesterday? Filing a waiver claim and signing former Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Zach Sieler to the team’s 53-man roster to take his place. Sieler, a 2018 7th-round draft choice from Ferris State, will get a 4-game addition with the Dolphins in an effort to promote some long-term interest in developing his skillset.
The Dolphins would be wise to continue to pick over rosters from the NFL’s elite — as these are the players who may not be good enough to play in Baltimore, but would certainly be an upgrade over some of the competition for playing time here in Miami. Sieler, who is listed at 290 pounds, will fit right in on Miami’s defensive line among the heavy handed, stout anchors the Dolphins currently feature up front.
Expect to see Sieler rotated into the action lightly this weekend or to not dress at all — as that has been standard operating procedure for Brian Flores and company any time the team makes an acquisition late in the week. But that decision is no loss to the Dolphins’ efforts this weekend because the player they cut, Isaiah Prince, hasn’t dressed for a game in weeks anyway.
For Miami, there’s some optimism for what this signing could possibly become down the road. Sieler was a small school developmental prospect who was tabbed as a “steal” when the Ravens drafted him in 2018. In Miami, the coaches can work hands on with him to help further draw out the technique to boost his natural talent. With the Dolphins’ coaching staff intent of developing players, small school physical talents like Sieler fit right in their wheelhouse.
