Dolphins expected to replace DC Patrick Graham with Josh Boyer

The Miami Dolphins are expected to replace DC Patrick Graham with cornerbacks coach Josh Boyer.

The defensive coordinator change in Miami isn’t something many expected — once the Dolphins finished the season they figured to be a promising coaching staff with the chance to run things back for another go-round in 2020. That, clearly, won’t be the case. Because Brian Flores bid farewell to his offensive coordinator, Chad O’Shea, in the immediate aftermath of the 2019 season and now the Dolphins are bidding farewell to defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who will take the same job in New York with the Giants.

But Miami’s defensive coordinator position reportedly won’t be open for long, nor will it take them long to find his replacement. The Dolphins, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, are expected to elevate cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator Josh Boyer to assume Graham’s role as Miami’s defensive coordinator in 2020.

Boyer, another Patriots disciple, has been a long-time presence in Dolphins head coach Brian Flores’ coaching circles. Boyer has been with the New England Patriots since 2006 and has served as the Patriots’ defensive backs/cornerbacks coach since 2009 before moving to coach in Miami with Flores at the beginning of last year.

Considering the Patriots’ successful track record of unearthing and developing some good young talent in the secondary — and the play of so many street free agents and waiver wire additions this season in Miami, the Dolphins at least have reason to be optimistic. Boyer has done well with his players everywhere he’s been — now he’ll reportedly be responsible for the entire defense.

Let’s see what he’s able to cook up.
