While the Miami Dolphins are gearing up for their first postseason game in over five years, they’re doing so without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who remains in concussion protocol.
With Sunday potentially being Miami’s last game of the season, there’s already been talk about directions that the team could go in 2023, the second under head coach Mike McDaniel.
However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are expected to keep Tagovailoa as the starter for his fourth professional season.
He went on to speak on the team’s view of the quarterback in the new system.
“But regardless of what happens in Sunday’s wild-card round game in Buffalo or throughout Miami’s postseason, the Dolphins have been pleased with Tagovailoa’s development this season under first year coach Mike McDaniel, according to sources,” Schefter wrote. “Medical professionals also are confident that Tagovailoa should be able to resume his NFL career next season, if not sooner, sources said.”
This offseason, the Dolphins will have to decide whether or not to extend a fifth-year option to the former first-round pick, which would keep him under team control for 2024 as well.
With the impressive peaks that he reached when healthy in 2022, it might be worth the roll of the dice.
