Dolphins elevate QB Reid Sinnett from practice squad for Week 3

Week 3 of the 2021 NFL regular season is going to bring about a lot of answers for the Dolphins. How mentally resilient is this young team? How well will they respond to the adversity of the week that was in South Florida and the loss of their starting quarterback? Can they take advantage of some key losses to the Raiders via injury? Can Miami keep their season afloat while facing the prospect of playing the next three games with a new man behind center?

And a new man behind him on the depth chart.

With the news that Tua Tagovailoa will spend (at least) the next three games on the Injured Reserve list, the Miami Dolphins have elevated practice squad quarterback Reid Sinnett onto the active roster for this weekend’s game — positioning him to formally serve as the Dolphins’ backup quarterback.

Sinnett captured the enthusiasm of Dolphins fans everywhere with his brilliant performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 of the 2021 preseason; but his overall inexperience and inconsistency don’t figure to play well in a formal NFL regular season game. So while Sinnett was a blast to watch create plays against the Bengals backups, let’s hope the quarterback situation in Miami doesn’t go so far south that we end up seeing Sinnett taking real NFL action.

If that happens, the odds of Miami bridging the gap until their starting quarterback returns from IR would seem to get more and more slim each week — and the end result could be disastrous for Miami’s big picture standing in 2021.
