While most teams are preparing for the 2022 NFL draft that’s just a few months away, the Miami Dolphins were waiting to find out where their pick would fall.
Their original draft pick (No. 15) was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles during last year’s draft, as Miami moved up the board to draft wide receiver Jaylen Waddle out of Alabama. However, the Dolphins still had the first-round pick that belonged to the San Francisco 49ers because Miami had traded back previously.
San Francisco’s campaign came to an end on Sunday when they lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game. This solidified the pick as No. 29 in this year’s draft.
With that information, Miami can now begin working on the next step and decide what they’d like to do with it. They could either use the draft pick and take a chance on a rookie, or they could trade the pick for a proven veteran who may have more of a chance to impact the team immediately. Either move would have their risks, as we just saw three rookies play huge roles for the Dolphins this past season.
Whatever they do, it will likely be a collaborative decision made by the front office and whoever ends up being the new head coach.
