One thing we know about Brian Flores is that the man is not afraid to make a change. Flores has quickly proven himself immune to second guessing himself — between firing his offensive line coach ahead of his first season in Miami and then taking on two new coordinators in the immediate aftermath of his first season with the Dolphins, Flores is no stranger to shuffling the deck if he feels his team needs a change. And while there are no dismissals this time around, the Miami Dolphins have indeed shaken things up once again.
It was announced today by ESPN’s Field Yates that the Dolphins have added two new assistants to their coaching staff ahead of the 2020 season.
The Dolphins have rounded out their coaching staff by hiring Steve Ferentz (the son of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz) as a coaching assistant and former Chiefs RB Kolby Smith as their offensive QC coach.

The additions of Steve Ferentz and Kolby Smith to Miami’s staff should finalize the staff ahead of training camp next month — with both serving in lower-level positions on the staff. With an experiences offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey and Flores himself able to keep his hands on the defensive side of the football, the Dolphins most pressing needs from a coaching perspective are apparently more administrative than they are anything else.
Ferentz, who played for his father, Kirk, at the University of Iowa from 2013 to 2016, has spent the last few seasons as an assistant at Central Michigan. He won’t be the only addition from the college ranks this offseason; as Miami added defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander from Cal and outside linebackers coach Austin Clark from Illinois already this offseason.
