Does CBS Sports think Florida will make the New Year’s Six?

Jerry Palm doesn’t think Florida is a New Year’s Six team right now.

Florida has taken care of business in the first two weeks of the season, but three-score victories over Florida Atlantic and South Florida have felt a bit disappointing considering that starting quarterback Emory Jones has struggled, throwing four interceptions in those two contests.

Of course, everyone is talking about redshirt freshman Anthony Richardson, who has been a walking highlight reel so far this season. However, coach Dan Mullen is adamant that Jones is the starter moving forward, and he’ll need to improve a lot if this team is going to return to the New Year’s Six for the fourth-straight year.

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm doesn’t see it. In his post-Week 2 bowl projections, he has Florida playing in the Citrus Bowl against Wisconsin, who is 1-1 with a loss to Penn State in Week 1. The Gators have played in the Citrus Bowl five times (including twice in its predecessor, the Tangerine Bowl), most recently after the 2015 season when they lost to Michigan. Florida has never faced the Badgers before.

The path to the NY6, or even the playoff, is certainly there for UF. But it will almost certainly require the team to pull off an upset over either Alabama or Georgia. The team is going to have to take a step forward for that to happen.
