Doc Rivers had praise for Sixers rookie Tyrese Maxey for effort vs. Nets

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers had high praise for rookie Tyrese Maxey for his effort against the Brooklyn Nets.

The Philadelphia 76ers had a tough night on Thursday as they took a bad loss to the Brooklyn Nets trailing by as many as 18 and giving up 122 points to a team missing Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. It was definitely a forgettable night for the Sixers as they continue to work out the kinks.

The one bright spot was the play of rookie Tyrese Maxey who hopped off the bench and he had 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting and he did not turn the ball over in just under 21 minutes played. For a team that committed 20 of them, that was a welcomed sign for coach Doc Rivers.

“He played great,” said Rivers. “I thought he was the one guy that came in the game with great energy and tried to run stuff for us. So, very happy with him.”

It was a nice showing for the rookie. Nothing really went well for the Sixers on Thursday and him being able to show off his mental toughness in a tough situation is something that he can build off for the future.

“My mindset was to just go in and help us win,” said Maxey. “That’s always my mindset and whatever the circumstance is, that’s my role on the team, be a sparkplug, and help the team in whatever way it needs to be helped.”

Another really impressive thing to be pointed out with Maxey is that he knocked down two triples on four attempts. That is an encouraging sign and Philadelphia will continue to encourage him to shoot the ball. He works hard at his game and the results will soon come.

“Confidence wise, I put the work in every single day, I’m in the gym,” Maxey added. “This summer I was in the gym at 6:00 A.M., making 100, lift, come back, and do it all over again at 10:00 so I have confidence. I know I can knock it down so if they’re gonna leave me open, then I’m going to shoot it. Coach Doc told me the same thing as well.”

Maxey will continue to play a big role on this team moving forward and he will continue to get a look. He has a lot of flash to his game and he is not afraid of the moment.
