‘Do it on Saturday’ is the mantra for 2023 USC defense

Everyone at #USC — coaches, players, trainers, waterboys — knows talk is cheap for the Trojan defense. Saturday is what counts.

Alex Grinch knows he can talk and talk until the cows come home, and that it won’t matter one bit if his USC defense doesn’t take big forward strides this season.

Grinch gave 247Sports another indication that he knows how he will be judged this year: not by anything he says, but by how his defense performs when the lights go on and live games begin.

“You gotta go do it on Saturday,” Grinch said. “What you’ve done doesn’t matter, but then the same token is in terms of getting evaluation as to where you’re at. We’ve always had an understanding of what those pieces are, so I think just a more consistent group.

“Now again, you’re two plays or two series or a quarter away from not being a consistent group, but having a better understanding of each individual call, each individual wrapping, each individual position what you’re going to get on the given down and a little bit less hope-for-execution type of thing, so I give these guys credit for consistency.”

Everyone is clear about what we need to see from the 2023 USC defense. No excuses, no midseason revisions.
