As soon as the disaster that is the Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 NFL season ends, the team is going to have some interesting roster decisions to make. None will be greater than what to do with the quarterback position.
In all probability, Ben Roethlisberger will retire at the end of the season and it won’t be riding off into the sunset on a high note. Nevertheless, the team must then move forward and try to begin like without Big Ben.
For many, this means drafting a quarterback early in the 2022 NFL draft. The camps are pretty squarely divided between drafting a new signal-caller, trading for one and just rolling with someone already on the roster.
According to our friend Luke Easterling, editor at Draft Wire, Pittsburgh and several other times are going to find themselves wanting if they opt for next year’s draft as an answer to their quarterback woes as this is a very down draft crop of quarterbacks.
For my money, the only quarterback in this class I would use a first-round pick on is Liberty’s Malik Willis. He’s a fabulous combination of athleticism and arm talent and the type of quarterback the Steelers could use to continue to advance the Pittsburgh offense.
There is still a lot of college football left to be played this season but if you are hoping a group emerges like the 2020 NFL had, you are going to be disappointed. This is a real issue for the Steelers who need a guy who can come in and play sooner rather than later.
