Did Stephon Gilmore request a trade from Colts this offseason?

DeForest Buckner indicated that Stephon Gilmore requested a trade this offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts made a somewhat surprising move this offseason by trading away cornerback Stephon Gilmore to the Dallas Cowboys, but now we have a bit more information as to why it happened.

Without coming out and fully saying it, DeForest Buckner essentially hinted at the notion that Gilmore requested a trade from the Colts considering the direction they’re set to head in with the rebuild.

“Gilly is at a different point in his career than I am. He just finished up Year 11, and I’m going into Year 9, so you know, if I was in his position, maybe I would have considered the same thing,” Buckner told reporters via The Indianapolis Star. “That’s the best decision that he made for him and his family, and I’m all for it.”

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Gilmore requested a trade. He’s in the back half of his career and probably saw the direction the Colts were heading in. Sitting through a rebuild wasn’t in his plans, and now he gets to join a playoff contender in the Dallas Cowboys.

Gilmore was a bright spot for the Colts during a tumultuous 2022 season. They received a fifth-round pick in exchange, and now it leaves them with a massive question mark at the cornerback position.

It’s likely the Colts will be looking at signing another addition in free agency while using the 2023 NFL draft to bring in more depth at the cornerback position.
