Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow sent a very public, obvious message to the team this week.
Pay great players like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. That’s it.
In doing so over the course of a lengthy press conference ahead of the season finale, Burrow potentially let slip some info about Higgins’ future with the Bengals.
When asked about the subject of Week 18 perhaps being the last Burrow-Chase-Higgins ride, the star quarterback said this: “It’s obviously a possibility, not one that I’m excited about, but that’s not in the plans, I would say.”
The that’s not in the plans part of the answer is doing some serious heavy lifting.
Maybe that’s reading too much into things, sure. Perhaps Burrow is only referring to Higgins’ desire to stay with the team, which seems obvious after he split with his former agent this month and joined the same reps as Chase.
Still, perhaps Burrow is also talking about his own plans in the form of contract restructuring or whatever else it would take to keep the Big 3 in town.
And perhaps he’s referring to the plans of the team itself, especially in response to his public pressure and how this season played out.
Either way, Burrow is often as surgical at the podium as he is in the pocket, so this little comment stands out in a big way.
