Now that the College Football regular season has officially ended, many Power Five programs have now found their next head coach.
Cincinnati becomes the most recent program to hire a new head coach, replacing the departing Luke Fickell, who left for Wisconsin, with former Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield. Although not official from the University, Louisville has reportedly replaced Satterfield with former Cardinal quarterback, Jeff Brohm, who just led Purdue to the Big Ten Championship game.
That leaves Purdue and Stanford as the only remaining Power Five programs that still need to hire a new head coach. While we wait on those hires, let’s take a look at programs that have made their new head coaching selections.
USA TODAY College Wire regional editor Patrick Conn has graded every Power Five hire to this point, including Auburn’s hiring of Hugh Freeze. Conn gives the hire a grade of A-, and says that Freeze has the ability to put Auburn back into the SEC West race.
During his time at Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze defeated Nick Saban twice. That’s enough to make him a legend on the Plains. He compiled an overall record of 70-40 when you factor in vacated wins during his time at Ole Miss and Liberty. He is certainly more qualified than the previous coach but he has plenty of work to do as Freeze looks to get Auburn back on track.
Conn’s grading of Auburn falls in the “middle of the road” category. Conn gives Wisconsin and Nebraska an A+ for their hires of Luke Fickell and Matt Rhule respectively. Georgia Tech’s hire of Brent Key, Cincinnati’s hire of Scott Satterfield, and Arizona State’s hire of Kenny Dillingham received lower grades than Auburn’s coaching hire.
