Diamond Heels win a heated battle against Gardner Webb

The Diamond Heels grabs a 5-4 win over Gardner Webb after a six-day break.

The Diamond Heels were in action Tuesday night, taking on Gardner Webb after a six-day break.

A game that would come down to the end had moments as both teams fought on and off the mound with emotions running high. Mac Horvath got things going for UNC, hitting a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead. The home run also marked Horvaths’ 20th homer, adding to his remarkable year.

UNC would go scoreless in the next two innings. Meanwhile, the Bull Dogs found their rhythm, scoring three runs to give them a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. However, UNC was able to answer back quickly, tying the game after a Reece Holbrook sacrifice bunt RBI.

In the next inning, Gardner Webbs’ Humberto Torres hit a homer to take back control 4-3. As both teams continued to battle, the game would get heated after the Tar Heels failed to get a run in the bottom of the seventh, with emotions getting the best of both teams.

The heated exchange reignited the Tar Heels, as they would go on to tie and take the lead all in the eighth inning. Nevertheless, that was all she wrote, as UNC would end any late attempt at a comeback with pitcher Matt Poston putting the Bulldogs on a leash with a strikeout to end it.

The Diamond Heels will be back in action Thursday as they kick off their last series of the regular season against NC State
