Diamond Heels fall to Coastal Carolina

The UNC baseball program fell to Coastal Carolina, giving up eight runs in the eighth on Tuesday.

After a 3-1 week that was capped off with a series win over Duke, the Diamond Heels got this week off to a tough start.

After jumping out to a 3-1 lead over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, the Diamond Heels watched Coastal Carolina put up eight runs in the eighth inning to grab a 12-7 win.

UNC trailed 1-0 after Coastal Carolina scored a run on a throwing error but then rallied to grab the lead. Hunter Stokely scored on a scoring error in the bottom of the third for the Tar Heels first run and then they got two more as Jackson Van De Brake was hit by a pitch forcing in a run and then Tomas Fricke scored on a fielders choice.

After Coastal Carolina tied it in the top of the fourth, UNC got two more back in the fifth. Coastal Carolina added a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4 when UNC responded with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Leading 7-4 going into the eighth, it felt like UNC had a grip on this game and another win. But then Coastal Carolina put up a big crooked number in that eighth inning.

UNC had to use four pitchers in the eighth inning as they gave up five hits, four walks and hit a batter in the big inning. It ended up being the difference for Coastal Carolina, sending the Tar Heels to a 18-7 record.

The Tar Heels get set for a road series in South Bend as they begin a three-game series on Friday night against Notre Dame.
