Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney outclassed George Kambosos Jr. to win a wide decision in their rematch, repeating the performance that earned him the four major titles in June.
The official scores were 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110.
Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) picked the overmatched Kambosos apart from the opening bell, fighting behind his jab and landing eye-catching right hands consistently.
Kambosos never gave up but couldn’t figure out how to land enough punches to make the fight competitive.
A full report will follow shortly.
Round 12
Shutout? Probably not. But we’re probably looking at a 118-110 victory for Haney, maybe 119-109. Bottom line: Haney couldn’t have been more dominating short of a knockout.
Round 11
Kambosos had a relatively good round. He’s still trying hard and managed to land a few eye-catching shots. That doesn’t mean he won the round, though. Haney is still picking him apart from a comfortable range.
Round 10
Big round for Haney. He walked down Kambosos and landed some punishing blows, raising the possibility of a knockout. Kambosos is doing almost nothing but eating shots.
Round 9
That round was relatively competitive and bloody, as both men are cut. Kambosos landed a few good power shots. Haney still won the round, though. He jabbed well, also connected on some big rights.
Round 8
The gap in ability between Haney and Kambosos is large. Haney just had to stay focused to win the fight going away. Haney was cut about the right eye in the round.
Round 7
Kambosos is trying. He just doesn’t have the tools or the know how. Haney is picking the Aussie apart with perfectly timing punches from range. He’s not hurting Kambosos, which might mean we won’t see a knockout.
Round 6
Good round for Haney, who’s outclassing Kambosos. Haney is landing more than enough punches to win rounds and not getting hit. Kambosos looks lost, like he has no idea how to proceed. One-sided fight.
Round 5
Neither guy is particularly busy, which is making for a boring fight. Haney is winning rounds by landing a handful of punches while Kambosos can’t find the target. Haney is in control. He has probably won four or five rounds so far.
Round 4
Kambosos can’t land with any consistency. He’s jumping around, posturing, but not connected on many punches. Haney didn’t land many shots that round, either. Haney still looks more comfortable, though.
Round 3
Good round for Haney, who seems to have found his range. He landed more clean, accurate punches in that round than he did in the first two stanzas combined. Kambosos is landed next to nothing.
Round 2
The fight is evenly matched so far. Haney probably landed more clean shots that round but neither guy has a significant advantage. We’ll see who figures out whom first.
Round 1
Kambosos came out with a lot of energy, although he didn’t get much done most of the round. Haney did some jabbing and landed a few power shots. Then, in the final seconds, Kambosos charged Haney and landed some solid power shots.
