Devin Haney arrested on felony weapons charge in Los Angeles

Devin Haney was arrested on a felony weapons charge in Los Angeles in the early morning hours Thursday.

Lightweight champion Devin Haney was arrested on a felony concealed weapons charge in the early morning hours Thursday in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports. He has a court date of Aug. 3.

Police said a handgun was found under the driver’s seat when the car in which he was a passenger was pulled over for a traffic violation. The gun was a semi-automatic hand gun, according to TMZ.

The younger Haney was booked and then released on $35,000 bond. He was released at 8:12 a.m., according to court records cited by TMZ.

According to TMZ, Haney spent Wednesday evening at Catch L.A., a West Hollywood nightspot. The car was pulled over shortly after midnight because of an unsafe lane change and failure to use a turn signal, the outlet reported.

The driver of car reportedly told the police officers that there was a firearm in the car. Haney was the one arrested because the car was registered to him.

Bill Haney told ESPN that the incident was “a misunderstanding that will be solved when Devin goes to court. It’s unfortunate that he was arrested with his armed licensed security, and I’m confident things are going to be worked out.”

Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) is coming off his biggest victory, a close, but unanimous decision over Vasiliy Lomachenko in defense of his 135-pound titles on May 20.

He and 140-pound titleholder Teofimo Lopez have exchanged taunts on Twitter over the past few days that seem to be leading to meeting in the ring.
