Devil May Cry 5 has sold more than five million copies

Capcom’s stylish character action series is bigger than ever.

After all these years, it seems that Devil May Cry 5 is a bonafide mainstream hit.

On Wednesday, Capcom announced that Devil May Cry 5 has sold over five million copies. The games originally came out for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 8, 2019, then had a Special Edition re-release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in November 2020. This year, there was even an Amazon Luna port, which is probably still the streaming platform’s best title. Strangely, there was no clarification on whether the newer editions factor into this milestone or not.

Games industry insider Benji-Sales states that these numbers make Devil May Cry 5 the most successful title in the franchise. Devil May Cry 4 trials close behind at 4.8 million sold, while DmC: Devil May Cry comes in third at 3.8 million. That’s right, Ninja Theory’s controversial reboot beat out the original PS2 games. Much to the chagrin of series purists everywhere.

The original trilogy isn’t far behind, mind you. Devil May Cry 3 leads the charge at 2.3 million copies sold, while Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2 come in at 2.1 million and 1.7 million in sales, respectively. The HD Collection is dead last with 1.2 million. None of these milestones stand shoulder to shoulder with something like Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, but character action games rarely sell like Devil May Cry.
