Pistons at Hawks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hawks 127, Pistons 117

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. Detroit would be an enticing underdog if Blake Griffin or Derrick Rose were in the lineup. The Hawks are a young team without a winning pedigree. I’d like to fade them as often as possible, but it’s too tough to land that plane, so to speak, in this Pistons-Hawks game.

Against the spread (ATS)

I lean Pistons 10.5 (-115) because my instinct is to bet against the Hawks until they prove it.

However, I’ll concede that Atlanta’s 2-0 record is impressive and, despite not playing anyone that good, the Hawks have covered and won by double-digits in both of their games (a 124-104 win vs. the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 23 and a 122-112 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies this past Sunday).

Officially, I’ll PASS on the spread and load up on the total.

Over/Under (O/U)

Defense doesn’t matter in today’s NBA, and it probably matters even less for a team like the Hawks. Yes, the Pistons are missing notable talent – guys who’ve made multiple All-Star games in Blake and D-Rose – but the next guys up can get buckets against professional basketball players.

The major differences in the starters compared to the backups are making winning plays in the fourth quarter and sustainable production. You cannot just add Blake and D-Rose’s numbers together, subtract it from Detroit’s team points per game average and assume you figured it out. The Pistons probably aren’t scoring 80 points because they are without a couple of key contributors.

The Pistons-Hawks total has come down from a 226.5-point opener mostly because of Detroit’s injury news, and I disagree with that line movement. Even if the Pistons struggle offensively, the Hawks have the firepower with Trae Young and Co. to score 125-plus any given night.

GIMME OVER 223.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.
