The Chicago Bears have found a new tight end in Ryan Griffin, who figures to serve as Cole Kmet’s backup heading into the 2022 season.
Griffin, a former sixth-round pick in 2013, has spent his entire career in the AFC. He spent his first six seasons with the Houston Texans, where he was the backup tight end but still saw plenty of targets. Griffin later signed with the New York Jets in 2019, where he had a career year with 34 catches for 320 yards and five touchdowns.
Details of Griffin’s contract have emerged, and it’s a favorable one. Griffin gets a one-year deal worth $2.205 million with $750,000 guaranteed, according to Over The Cap. Griffin also gets a signing bonus of $250,000 with a base salary of $1.75 million.
The tight end position becomes less of a need following Griffin’s addition, as he figures to serve as the starting “U” tight end to complement Kmet. Griffin is a 10-year veteran that brings experience and leadership to a tight end group that includes Kmet and Jesper Horsted.
