There have been some reports that Florida Gators basketball star Keyontae Johnson has been ruled out for the rest of the season after his tragic collapse on the court against the Florida State Seminoles on Dec. 12. According to The Athletic’s college basketball managing editor Seth Davis in his latest Hoop Thoughts article, these reports are completely erroneous.
Here is what he had to say about the unconfirmed reports circulating in the sports media.
I saw it reported on television over the weekend that Florida forward Keyontae Johnson has been ruled out for the rest of the season. That is not true. Yes, it seems far-fetched to imagine that Johnson, who collapsed during a game on Dec. 12 and spent more than a week in the hospital, will play again this season. But it has not been ruled out, and it may not be as impossible as people think. Johnson attends practice and travels with the team, but he is not doing any physical activity. When I asked Gators coach Mike White whether Johnson might play again this season, he emphasized he is not involved in any medical conversations among Johnson, his family and the school’s medical staff, but he also made it clear that no one is foreclosing this possibility. “The medical team working with Keyontae has been phenomenal, and they’ll be the ones who determine what comes next for him, along with Keyontae and his family,” White said. “We just don’t know what that looks like yet.”
