Despite penalty on birdie chip, Jon Rahm wins Memorial, moves to No. 1

Jon Rahm was cruising to an authoritative victory in the Memorial on Sunday when he ran into turbulence. After a 50-minute stoppage, Rahm returned to the ninth hole with an 8-shot lead. But a bogey on 10, a double on 11 and a bogey on 14, coupled with a birdie by Ryan Palmer on 12, cut Rahm’s lead to three. Then matters got dicey when Rahm chipped in from behind the 16th green for birdie. As he soled his club right before the chip, the ball moved and didn’t return to its original spot.He was hit with a two-shot penalty after his round but he still won the Memorial by three over Palmer. With the win, Rahm will jump past Rory McIlroy into the No. 1 spot in the world ranking. He is the 24th player to reach No. 1
