Though the Houston Texans are 4-9 on the season and eliminated from the playoffs, they are on the verge of a decade of opportunity with vacancies at general manager and coach.
The McNair family wants to get these hires right.
As part of the organization’s due diligence, according to a report during the NFL on CBS telecast of Sunday afternoon’s 36-7 beating at the paws of the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, chairman and CEO Cal McNair has asked quarterback Deshaun Watson for his input on who they should hire as they start the process.
“I mean, they just put a lot of trust in me and what things he wants and what I want, and just as a whole, as an organization where we want to go forward from here,” Watson said after the game. “We’ve got to make decisions and go from there. But, yeah, that was pretty much it. A lot of respect between me and Mr. McNair.”
The Texans will have to hire a general manager who is able to build around Watson as the centerpiece, and it will be a challenge given the salary cap limitations and Houston missing their first and second round picks in the 2021 NFL Draft. Houston also has to hire a coach who can get the most out of a team that already has the quarterback situation solved, but needs work on other parts of the roster.
