DeShaun Foster sheds light on UCLA’s ‘special assistant’

Foster has a “special assistant.”

DeShaun Foster has a lot on his plate heading into his first season with the Bruins as head coach. Aiding him in the process is assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, as well as a lesser-known name: Mike Babcock.

Babcock, whose official title with the team is “special assistant to the head coach,” has been with the program in many stints. Babcock was a linebacker for the Bruins from 1997-1999, then served as a position coach and graduate assistant from 2000 to 2004.

Babcock is back with the program and is a part of the supporting cast around first-year coach Foster. When asked about his role in an interview with BruinsReportOnline, Foster added some context to the role will play at his side.

“(Babcock is) Just somebody that’s been around the game, you know, he’s been a head coach for 10 years or 11 years. Five years when he was here before and then I played with him for three years, too. So, just somebody that you know you can trust, has a lot of experience in this role, but you know that he can help the offense, too. So, just a coach that can come bring leadership and just help the program.”

Untangling the titles and roles that each coach and assistant will play this season is hard to judge this early into the year. However, as the season progresses, insights may become more clear as to what and how Babcock factors into the coaching staff outside of just his leadership capabilities.
