DeShaun Foster was an assistant for Chip Kelly and the UCLA Bruins in 2023. A year later, he is running the show in Westwood and got his first career win as the UCLA head coach.
It wasn’t pretty, but the Bruins snuck out a 16-13 win over Hawaii on the road in Week 1.
Foster was excited about getting the win and beginning his head coaching career, per James H. Williams of USA Today.
“I was just happy to get the victory. That was really it – it was really emotional in there, so it’s big that I was able to get a victory in my first game. I’m just glad that my players were putting it on themselves to get us that victory…You know, it was just the whole emotion of the game. I had kind of kept a lot of stuff bottled in, coming into this. I didn’t want it to be out there, all emotional. But I was just excited that we got our first victory.”
Again, it was an ugly game for the majority of it, and there are plenty of concerns. Nonetheless, Foster is excited to get the victory.
