It’s been a long road for Derrius Guice.
Guice, who hasn’t forgotten about how he fell in the draft initially, has had multiple injury setbacks since joining the Washington Redskins.
But coming out of a breakout game, Guice wasn’t afraid to keep it honest while talking about his comeback process, according to Redskins.com’s Jacob Steinberg:
“Just never give up. I’m a guy that — everybody knows about my fall in the draft and then as soon as I got here, injury after injury. It’s been hell, literally. I’ve had people in my corner who never left. I’ve always had people that were negative. I’m just really strong mentally, and I just didn’t let all the outside noise get to me…”
The long comeback trail resulted in a breakout game for Guice during a win over the Carolina Panthers. On all of just 10 carries, Guice piled on 129 yards and two scores on a 12.9 average.
Guice is bound to regress statistically in the coming weeks now that defenses are awake to the danger he presents. But given what we know about him — aside from the incredible talent — he’s not likely to take his foot off the pedal.
If Guice keeps clicking it’s a good sign for both himself and Dwayne Haskins when looking ahead to next year. And at the end of the day, it’s all a testament to his outlined approach to big setbacks.
