Derrick White breaks down viral moment with Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama: ‘I’m not an idiot’

After the San Antonio Spurs’ loss to the Boston Celtics, Derrick White broke down his viral moment with Victor Wembanyama.

The San Antonio Spurs welcomed the Boston Celtics to town on Sunday night, but unfortunately, they got crushed. Boston, currently the best team in the NBA, waltzed to a victory, earning a 134-101 blowout win over the Spurs, who have the second-worst record in the NBA. However, the loss was highlighted by some fun moments.

One of the most notable was Victor Wembanyama’s ridiculous layup that saw him gather the ball at the three-point line, take two steps in, and half-dunk/half-layup the ball in the basket. Celtics guard Derrick White, a former Spur, was attempting to chase down Wembanyama but, in the end, decided to duck out of the way.

When asked about the moment after the game, White kept it real, admitting that once he realized he had no chance of getting it, he made a business decision.

“I’m not an idiot,” White said with a laugh. “I was hoping he would take another dribble, and then I could try to do that (strip or steal), but he picked it up and I never saw it again. So, I was just trying to get out of the way. That was crazy.”

Wembanyama finished the game with 21 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while shooting 8-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc.

Meanwhile, White put up 17 points, three rebounds, and five assists, while shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from deep.

White, who was a fan-favorite in San Antonio, earned “White’s an All-Star” chants from the crowd, with a healthy mix of Celtics and Spurs fans chiming in.
