Former Alabama Crimson Tide football running back Derrick Henry has been one of the best ball carriers in the NFL for nearly a decade. Now, he heads into the 2024 season as one of the oldest at 30 years old.
Following an eight-year career with the Tennessee Titans that consisted of enough accolades to warrant a trip to the Hall of Fame, Henry is preparing to play for a new team for the first time in his professional football journey. He joined the Baltimore Ravens over the offseason as a free agent.
While his signing was one of the most noteworthy moves of the offseason, fans have been weary as to what role he will play in the offense. Headlined by two-time MVP-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore backfield is one of the most versatile in the league. However, many are still unsure as to if Henry, given his age and years of experience, will be able to be a three-down back who can play at the level he has been throughout his career.
Recently, Henry addressed these concerns by arguing that his performance will speak for itself.
“That’s always going to be said when a running back gets up in age, the stigma on the position,” Henry said. “But I just focus on me being healthy, doing my job when I’m here and then let my play speak for my age.”
These same qualms by fans loomed in 2023, but Henry still managed to amass 1,167 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Though everyone’s career will end at some point, Henry hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.
