A Fresno State reunion in Las Vegas could be possible if the Green Bay Packers somehow let All-Pro receiver Davante Adams get to free agency.
Adams, a four-time Pro Bowler, has one year left on his deal with the Packers, and his college quarterback is ready to pounce if he hits the open market.
Raiders quarterback Derek Carr – who threw passes to Adams for two years at Fresno State – told Bri Mellon of ABC-30 in Fresno that he’s ready to hit the recruiting trail in an effort to help the Raiders get the Packers receiver in free agency.
“I will be recruiting very hard. When that time comes, it will be a full-court press,” Carr said.
Carr was Adams’ quarterback as both a redshirt freshman and sophomore in college. During each season, Adams caught over 100 passes, and Carr threw him 38 total touchdown passes.
The Packers made Adams a second-round pick in 2014, just 17 picks after the Raiders took Carr at No. 36 overall.
Carr said, with some conviction, that Adams is “the best receiver” in the NFL. Last season, Adams was a first-team All-Pro after catching 115 passes and an NFL-high 18 touchdowns. He’s been to four straight Pro Bowls.
The Packers will have to decide if they want to make Adams one of the highest-paid skill position players in football, or if they want to use the franchise tag, or potentially even let Adams get to free agency, the least likely of the options.
Adams, 28, will almost certainly command a new contract averaging over $20 million per season.
Teams like the Raiders would be lining up to add Adams if the Packers can’t get something done.
But here’s the good news: the Packers almost always get deals done with star players they want to keep. And even if Adams shared an interest in playing with Carr again, he’s not passing up a market-resetting deal if the Packers offer it.
Most likely, Adams will get his new deal with the Packers, regardless of who is playing quarterback, and Carr will have to keep waiting for the opportunity to play with his star college receiver.
