Dennis Allen declined to share an update on whether his starters will play in the New Orleans Saints’ preseason opener versus the Arizona Cardinals after Thursday’s practice. It was Allen’s last time speaking to the media before the game, so we likely won’t know the verdict until shortly before warmups on Saturday night.
What we do know is Derek Carr has lobbied to play in the preseason opener, while the Cardinals have already decided to keep Kyler Murray on the sideline. Allen said they haven’t discussed the plan of any starters with the team. The coaches began the process of making this decision on Thursday.
The interesting part of this decision is how New Orleans approached last year’s preseason, specifically on the offensive side of the ball. Carr was entering his first year in black and gold. He along with the rest of the starters played just one series in the preseason opener and rested through the other two exhibition games.
It’s difficult to believe the Saints would repeat that strategy again after last year’s disappointing results. It may not be a direct cause and effect, but it’s difficult not to be hesitant about taking the same approach.
Kickoff at State Farm Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, and the game will be broadcast on local FOX affiliates in the New Orleans market. Check here for local listings.
