Denver Broncos head coach candidate DeMeco Ryans has been recognized for his impressive second season as a defensive coordinator in the NFL.
Ryans, currently a DC for the San Francisco 49ers, has been nominated for the 2022 Assistant Coach of the Year award by the Associated Press. That kind of recognition helps explain why Ryans is a hot head coach candidate this offseason.
Because the 49ers have advanced to the NFC championship, Ryans would not be available for a potential second-round interview with the Broncos until next week. (He previously completed a first-round interview last week.)
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that Ryans should not be counted out behind Dan Quinn and Sean Payton as one of three presumed finalists for the job in Denver.
Ryans led one of the NFL’s best defenses this season that allowed just 16.3 points per game, which ranked No. 1 this year and would have also ranked first in 2021 and 2020. He is a notable HC candidate to watch as the Broncos move forward in the interview process.
