Delanie Walker is a somewhat unexpected addition to the free-agent pool at a time the Washington Redskins need some help at tight end.
And the answer is obvious: Why not?
Ron Rivera and Co. need to find a sure thing at the position for Dwayne Haskins after losing Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis. They shot their shot with Greg Olsen and just watched Hunter Henry receive a franchise tag.
Walker is certainly an interesting case on a prove-it deal.
Now 35, Walker has played in just eight games over the last two seasons. But he’s still been wildly productive when able to stay on the field, hence the 807 yards over 16 games in 2017.
This isn’t saying sign Walker and make him a staple of the offense — he’s past that stage of his career. But as a second option to pair with a rookie at the position? It doesn’t get much more reliable if Walker is healthy.
And besides the superb second-look option and depth presence, Walker is one of those character guys Rivera has been trying to find as he rebuilds the culture.
If the price is right (cheap), a small gamble on Walker could be well worth the value.
