The newest cornerback on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad has officially been assigned a jersey number.

According to the Chiefs’ roster on their media portal, DeAndre Baker will wear the No. 30 with Kansas City. Baker previously wore No. 27 with his old NFL team, the New York Giants. That number is currently occupied by Rashad Fenton. Baker’s college number, 18, isn’t an eligible number for a defensive back in the NFL. He also wore No. 2 in high school, which isn’t eligible. There’s really no telling if there is any significance to his choice here.

Adrian Colbert was technically the last player to wear No. 30 for the Chiefs. Before that, it was second-year CB Alex Brown, who is currently on injured reserve after injuring suffering a knee injury this offseason.

The number hasn’t been great to Kansas City in the past. It has mostly been worn by role players, especially in the defensive secondary. Some players that come to mind include Jamell Fleming, Josh Shaw, Jalil Brown and Steven Terrell. The most recent success story wearing the No. 30 is none other than former Chiefs RB Charcandrick West. He was with the Chiefs from 2014-2018 after joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Abilene Christian.

All-in-all this seems like a good number selection for Baker. It’s not like he had many options to choose from with 12 defensive backs on the roster between the practice squad and the 53-man roster.
